How Early Should Children Start Their Dental Visits?

March 15, 2019 - A new study published in the JAMA Network found that children who received dental care starting at birth had significantly better oral health than those who started care at age two. While the article focused on South Australian Aboriginal children, the results certainly have a bearing on all children. The study looked at 448 mothers and their children. Children who received dental intervention in infancy had significantly fewer dental cavities than their counterparts in the group who received delayed intervention. The intervention consisted of dental treatment to the mothers, fluoride varnish for the children and motivational discussions and guidance delivered to the mothers and children.

Poor oral health in childhood follow social patterns. It can be a reflection of the social factors of health and of the access to dental health service providers. Dental disease in children may contribute to poor nutrition, and their ability to learn and play.
